Al-Sarraj meets Pompeo in Brussels

The head of the Presidential Council (PC) of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj, met the US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, on the sidelines of NATO ministerial meeting in Brussels.

Al-Sarraj and Pompeo discussed the economic reforms and the expected elections process that would be held in 2019 in Libya.

From his side, Pompeo confirmed his country’s support to the GNA and the United Nations Envoy to Libya, Ghassan Salame, in implementing the reforms.

The US State Department said in a press release that the US would support Salame’s plan “for a Libyan-led National Conference to be held in the first weeks of 2019 and the subsequent electoral process to begin in the spring of 2019.”

The release stated that “the Secretary and the Prime Minister [Al-Sarraj] agreed on the importance of the GAN swiftly implementing comprehensive economic reforms.”

Pompeo and Al-Sarraj also “discussed the need to enhance fiscal transparency, ensure greater security for all Libyans, and stabilise oil production,” the release stated.

“Both men also reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to a partnership on counterterrorism,” the release added.
