Trump affirms his support for Libya on independence anniversary



The US president, Donald Trump, sent, on Sunday, a letter to the head of the Presidential Council (PC) of that Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj, expressing his best wishes for the Libyans on the 66th anniversary of the Independence Day.

Trump underscored that “the United States stands with the Libyan people as you seek to move beyond the legacy of more than 40 years of dictatorship, to establish inclusive institutions, to promote stability throughout the country, and to deny safe haven to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) and other terrorists.”

Trump stressed that signing the Political Agreement two years ago “was an important step toward overcoming Libya’s divisions and building a more prosperous future for the Libyan people.”

He stated that “the Political Agreement remains the only viable framework for a political solution throughout the transitional period.”

Trump affirmed the United States is committed to supporting the GNA and the Libyan people “who seek a unified country through national political reconciliation.”  He added that the US would keep supporting the Libyans “to defeat ISIS and other terrorists, provide security for the Libyan people, and address their urgent economic and humanitarian challenges, Libya needs unity.”

He finished his letter by stating that “the United States will continue to work with Libya, the United Nations, and international partners to promote a more stable and secure future for all Libyans.”
