LIBYAPROSPECT – Editorial

The Commander of the Army of the House of Representatives (HoR), General Khalifa Haftar, revealed that there would be a meeting to be held in Cairo between army officers from Haftar’s forces and others from the western side of Libya.

Observers raised questions about the alleged meeting, asking why the meeting would be in Egypt and to what extent it would succeed to unify the military units in Libya.

Haftar said, a few days ago, that the army officers who decided to attend the meeting are part of the Libyan Army including others from the city of Misrata. He added that some think that each side has different views about the other while they are from the same Libyan army.

From his side, the head of the military delegation from Misrata, Colonel Salem Juha, confirmed that there was a meeting last week gathered a delegation from Haftar’s forces and the one from Misrata. Juha described the meeting as positive.

Juha added that the meeting talked about the ways to unify the army bodies for the sake of improving the security, political, and economic situations in Libya.

It is worth mentioning that the media of Haftar supporters hadn’t talked about the meeting, which raises a question about who could participate in the meeting from the commanders of the Libyan army of the western side of Libya.

The advisor of the Defence Ministry of the Government of National Accord (GNA), General Suliman Al-Obaidi, said that the meeting in Egypt is not neutral because it is under the supervision of the Egyptian Intelligence Services. He added that it wouldn’t succeed.

Al-Obaidi told Arabi21 website that the meeting wouldn’t be reached because most of the army commanders on the western side of Libya are against Haftar and refusing the meeting.

Other observers said that the meeting is a new game played by Haftar to get recognition from high army officers on the western side of Libya to accept him as the leader of the Libyan army.

The observers clarified that this meeting would be ineffective because it would include army officers from western cities that already support Haftar.
