LIBYAPROSPECT – Tripoli

A United Nations report accused the UAE of violating arms embargo imposed on Libya by providing fighter jets to the House of Representatives (HoR) affiliated army that led by General Khalifa Haftar.

The report said that Abu Dhabi had provided material and direct support to Haftar’s forces. It considered the UAE as a support violation of the imposed arms embargo.

It said that the UAE had provided material and direct support to Haftar’s Army, which significantly increased air support.

“Equipment sent to Libya became increasingly complicated,” the report said. it added that the foreign support to the armed groups regarding technical assistance, training, and direct support increased.

UN experts said that they followed the fighter jets shipments made in Belarus that sent to UAE, provided pictures of those loads landing in Al-Khadim air base in the east. The report stressed that all fighter jets were delivered to Haftar’s army in April 2015.

They also pointed that the UAE had provided Haftar with one AT-802I, besides armoured vehicles made by arms companies based in the UAE, handed to Tobruk forces in April 2016.

The UAE didn’t respond to requests by the UN to clarify the matter. It is worth mentioning that Haftar refused to recognise the internationally recognised Presidential Council (PC) of the Government of National Accord based (GNA) in Tripoli.
