LIBYAPROSPECT – London

The counsellor for the Defense Ministry of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Suliman Mahmud Al-Obaidi, said, in a statement, that the commander of the army of the House of Representatives (HoR), General Khalifa Haftar, had requested the help from his relatives from Al-Furjan tribe and had recruited about 500 from the Egyptian side of the tribe.

Al-Obaidi added that Haftar recruited even 700 soldiers from the Sudanese Justice and Equality Movement to fight with him in Benghazi then he was promoted to the military rank of Field Marshal by the head of the HoR, Ageela Saleh.

Regarding his attitude towards the events in the Oil Crescent Region, Al-Obaidi stated that the fighters of Benghazi Defense Brigades who are fighting against Haftar, are the revolutionaries of Benghazi who were excluded from their hometown, Benghazi.

He clarified that “despite I am, personally, a leftist but I do not describe the fighters of Benghazi Defense Brigades as extremist Islamists, and Haftar would not be able to defeat them alone.”

Al-Obaidi said that “we, Libyans, are still under the Chapter VII of the UN Charter, I call the UN to impose an air ban so Haftar’s warplanes cannot bombard the fighters of Benghazi Defense Brigades, who are affiliated with Presidential Council (PC) of the Government of National Accord (GNA).
