The UN praises Sirte victory against Daesh

The United Nations had congratulated the Presidential Council (PC) of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Al-Bunyan Al-Marsous forces, and the Libyan people for their victory against the terrorist group of Daesh in the city of Sirte.

The UN said in a statement, on Sunday that “the victory against the group is a significant step towards liberating Libya from terrorism, as it ends those days when Daesh controlled the territory inside the country.”

The United Nations envoy to Libya, Martin Kobler, said that “defeating terrorism across Libya benefits all Libyans, I praise Libyans who sacrificed themselves for the common cause. I provide my sincere condolences for the families of the martyrs, wishing a quick recovery for the injured.”

Kobler confirmed that “the immediate revival in Sirte should be a priority,” calling the PC to provide a plan to manage, secure, and stabilize Sirte. He called for removing the land mines and explosive devices to provide a safe return for the displacements, to provide the humanitarian aid, and medical care.

Kobler acknowledged the valuable international support that was provided to Al-Bunyan Al-Marsous forces in Sirte, confirming the need to continue the cooperation in fighting the terrorism.

He warned that “the Libyans should remain vigilance in the face of terrorism, take the opportunity to promote national reconciliation and move forward to implement the security arrangements. All of that requires the inclusion and rehabilitation of the fighters in a professional unified security body.”
