Al-Sarraj announces the liberation of Sirte

The head of the Presidential Council (PC) of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj, announced that the city of Sirte is officially liberated from Daesh, demanding all factions to join the PC to continue implementing the Libyan Political Agreement (PA).

Al-Sarraj said, in a televised speech, Late Saturday, that “we officially announce the Liberation of Sirte, the end of all military operations following the defeat of Daesh, after eight months of fierce fighting, today victory accomplished, thanks to the will of our people.”

He added that “Libyans won Sirte battle with the least capabilities, our armed forces achieved victory under the umbrella of the Government of National Accord.”

The forces of the Operation “Al-Bunyan Al-Marsous” wrestled full control over Al-Jiza Al-Baharya neighborhood in Sirte, earlier this month, the last Daesh bastion inside the city.

The PC launched, in May, the military operations to liberate Sirte from Daesh grip, named Al-Bunyan Al-Marsous, that managed to halt Daesh expansion.

The Libyan forces of Al-Bunyan Al-Marsous had lost more than 700 martyrs and three thousand injured, according to the official estimates. Confirmed losses among Daesh reached 2000 elements, according to the member of Media Center of Al-Bunyan Al-Marsous, Reda Essa.

Al-Sarraj pointed that Sirte liberation coincided with the anniversary of the Libyan Political Agreement (PA), urging those who he called “supporters of February and September” to join one table, face problems “by ourselves without mediation or interferences, put aside all political conflicts and end the five years suffering.”
