LIBYAPROSPECT – London
The American Defense Secretary, Ash Carter, said, on Wednesday, that the Libyan forces affiliated to the Presidential Council (PC) are close to defeat the Islamic State (IS) in the city of Sirte.
According to Reuters News Agency, Carter said that the Libyan forces, who are supported by the US air raids since the beginning of August, had cornered the IS in one small section of Sirte.
Carter stated, in a news conference in London, that “I expect that they’ll eliminate …. remaining opposition shortly.”
From its side, the forces of the Operation “Al-Bunyan Al-Marsous” said, on Saturday, that they had advanced against some of Islamic State’s last holdouts in Sirte.
The IS group had exploited severe political division in Libya to control Sirte for over a year ago, using it as a base for Libyan and foreign fighters.
The battles against the IS in Sirte are just part of the challenges in Libya, where the PC is trying to unite a multitude of rival factions that have divided after the collapse of Gaddafi regime in 2011.
Carter said that the United States would not stop its support for Libya after regaining Sirte.
