LIBYAPROSPECT – Rome
The British Prime Minister, Theresa May, in a press release in Rome that supporting the Government of National Accord (GNA) and its leader, Fayez Al-Sarraj is important for Britain and Italy.
May stated that helping the GNA to restore stability and rebuilding the economy is the best way to protect Libya from being the stronghold for the Islamic State (IS). She added that it is essential to confront the gangs that exploit the illegal immigrants and smuggle the innocents of women, children and men for the sake of profit taking.
During her visit to Rome, May talked with the Italian Prime Minister, Matteo Renzi, about Brexit and the UK relations with the EU, as well as the Libyan situation, on Wednesday.
About illegal immigration, May said that “90 percent of the EU’s migrants are crossing from Libya,” adding that Italy and the UK would be working to bolster the capacity of the Libyan coastguard to ensure the number of illegal crossings falls.
May endorsed Renzi’s migration Compact, which will provide extra aid to Sub-Saharan countries if they do more to stem the flow of people leaving the countries.
