Migrants rescued on journey from Libya to Europe

Thousands of migrants were rescued, on Tuesday, 20 miles away from Libya on international waters by warships from the European Union Naval Force Mediterranean (EUNAVFOR MED), Italian Marine and NGOs Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), Migrant Offshore Aid Station (MOAS), Sea Watch (Germany), and Proactive Open Arms (Spain).

The EUNAVFOR MED is also known as Operation Sophia, an EU-led military mission which aims to neutralize the migrant crisis. The migrants and refugees originated from Eritrea, Nigeria, Somalia, Gambia, South Sudan, Pakistan, Egypt, Mali, and elsewhere.

The migrants mostly travel on a rubber dinghy, with one group on a wooden vessel.

One Eritrean refugee told AP Television that one thousand and thirteen people from Eritrea and Somalia were aboard the wooden vessel.
