Gentiloni meets PC in Tripoli


The Italian Foreign Minister, Paolo Gentiloni, and his delegation held a meeting with the Presidential Council (PC) in Tripoli as the first foreign official to go there after installment of the PC.

They discussed reinforcing the role of the Government of National Accord (GNA) to stabilize the country, opening the Libyan air space, airline between Libya and Italy, activating the friendship agreement between the countries, and the Italian humanitarian support to Libya.

Gentiloni, stated that his visit to Tripoli on Tuesday is considered of Italy’s support for the Government of National Accord (GNA).

In a joint press conference in Tripoli with the deputy chief of the PC of the GNA, Ahmed Mitig, Gentiloni said that the visit that came after 2 weeks of the entry of the PC in Tripoli is clear message that Italy strongly supports the GNA at all levels.

He considered the visit to be the first step towards deep rooting the GNA, which will be followed by other supportive steps.

The Italian Foreign Ministry stated on Tuesday that Gentiloni is expected to hold a surprise visit to Tripoli to meet the head of the GNA.

He stressed that the Libyan – Italian Cooperation will be translated into practical ways within the coming days between institutions of the two countries, especially in regards to illegal immigration, pointing out that there will be cooperation between the interior ministers of the two countries to lay the foundations for the unified program to fight illegal immigration.

Libyan ministers of health and communications in the GNA will go to Italy, while the highway project will be reconsidered, as well as opening the Libyan skies, airlines between Libya and Italy, he stated.

He praised the courage of the Presidential Council (PC) on entering Tripoli and to work in the capital, calling on the international community to be at the same level of courage to support the GNA in all its decisions concerning Libya.
