Five European states agreed in a mini summit in Brussels on extending the anti-illegal migration operation SOPHIA inside Libyan regional water after gaining the authorization from the Libyan government.
The Summit on Friday came as an assurance on the importance of the Libyan cause that is as important as the EU-Turkish relations, a source in Europe told Al-Wasat website.
The source confirmed that Federica Mogherini reminded of the European commitments that can be implemented in the event of the seating of the Government of National Accord (GNA) in Tripoli. It was agreed that consultations continue in the matter of sanctions against hinderers of the political agreement.
The French President, Francois Hollande, the Prime Ministers of Italy, Malta, Britain and Spain and the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, and the EU representative for foreign relation, Federica Mogherini, took part in the summit.
Several European leaders warned against Libya’s transformation into a bridge towards Europe if Turkey is closed in front of migrants.
