The US Ambassador to Italy, John Phillips, said, Friday, that Italy intends to send 5000 troops to Libya, to secure the Libyan capital Tripoli and prevent the Islamic State group (IS) from controlling it.
The Islamic State (IS) has nearly 3000-5000 fighters inside Libya, including hundreds of Tunisians, Sudanese, Yemenis and Nigerians.
Phillips told, the Italian Corriere della Sera, that “the US participations hasn’t been discussed yet”, but he confirmed intelligence cooperation.
Phillips stressed the need to “encourage Libyans to achieve unity government to restore security, rule of law, and end miseries perpetrated by criminals and terrorists, who kidnap people for ransom and use them as human shields”.
Libya may witness an international military intervention against the Islamic State (IS), as some western special units arrived to the country and waged airstrikes against the group, coordination common chamber was established in Rome.
