Tunisian demonstrators cut the road and set tires to fire in Dhehiba city, south Tunisia, on Tuesday, in protest at holding their trade activities on the Tunisian-Libyan boarders in the city.
Most of the city’s residents live on smuggling oil and parallel trading with Libya through the land borders. The area has been unstable due to the repetitive closures of the borders for security reasons or to curb parallel trading.
Demonstrators demanded their government to provide alternatives and job opportunities along with its security decisions concerning the borders with Libya.
Tunisia bans youth younger than 35 years old from travelling to Libya, as a part of measures to stop youth from joining extremists’ training camps in Libya.
Tunisia was the scene of a number of terrorist operations in 2015 that some observers believe were executed by Tunisians trained in Libya.
