The United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), appealed Libyan parties to increase their efforts and bring the political dialogue to successful conclusion, and reach an agreement to form the awaited Government of National Accord (GNA) to resume Libya’s democratic transition.
UNSMIL said in its statement that the mission has undertaken extensive consultations with parties across Libya after the presentation of the political agreement, in order to address their concerns with respect to the formation of presidency council, especially the representation of the eastern region specifically Benghazi.
According to UNSMIL website, the statement said“These are primarily focused on the need for a formula that safeguards Libya’s historical traditions of geographical and regional balance and representation”.
The Mission added that all parties agreed on the legitimacy of these demands, and the need to expand the configuration of the Presidency Council from six to nine, to include the Prime Minister, five Deputy Prime Ministers, and three senior ministers.
All parties agreed that successful implementation of this reconfiguration requires more cooperation and partnership within the presidency council members, this would need adequate provisions governing the decision-making process in the Presidency Council.
