LIBYAPROSPECT – ZAWYA
Zawya city, 40km West of Tripoli, is witnessing a fight between “2 criminal armed groups” as stated by a Libyan journalist who didn’t want his name mentioned due to security issues, he is a witness to what has occurred in the city he resides in, Zawya.
The witness told LIBYAPROSPECT, in an exclusive contact, that the conflict started months ago, between Al-Blaaza tribe and Awlad Garbou’ tribe, both known in the area, adding that the fight ended by the mediation of the wise people on both sides. The killers weren’t caught, so the fight renews.
“The fighting scenario came back alive more fiercely on Tuesday.
Skirmishes took place in the middle of Zawya town between Omar Al-Mokhtar and Gamal Abdul Naser streets, near Al-Shohada’a square, where there is a neighbourhood inhibited by more than 70 families”, the source stated.
“While the market was stable, people shopping and cafes working, the place turned into a battle field between both sides in 5 minutes. Houses and cars were set to fire, and innocent people were injured”, he added.
More than 70 families were besieged inside their houses in a neighbourhood that lies between the 2 groups, amid of power outage, the witness told LIBYAPROSPECT.
Houses’ water tanks were destroyed, telephone networks were
cut off, due to fighting, and the lives of stranded old people, children and women are on the line. Fighting started around 1:30 PM, when most men aren’t home.
The source explained that, both groups were together with “Libya Dawn” group, but after peace was restored and fight ended between Zawya and Warshfana cities, months ago, an affiliate of one group killed a member of the other group for tribal a group on the ground of tribal feuds.
The source, who lives in the neighbourhood asserts that it has a civilian not tribal nature as it lies in the city centre, where shops, cafes people are.
The witness could only reach his family and take them out of the neighbourhood, with great difficulty, on Wednesday. He added that, trials to contact officials were made with no success, saying that some officials even switched their phones off.
Due to the fight, houses were set to fire; other houses’ and shops’ fronts were destroyed.
A neighbourhood resident was shot dead, whilst trying to take his family out of the neighbourhood; his family was killed too, while his 3 daughters were wounded, according to the source.
